Description

Gratiola viscidula, commonly known as Hedge Hyssop, is a native wildflower from North America that has gained popularity as an aquarium plant. This plant is relatively new to the aquatic hobby and is known for its distinctive thorny appearance when submerged. It s a versatile plant that can adapt to being fully submerged for long periods, making it a valuable addition to aquariums.

Gratiola viscidula thrives under good lighting conditions and can be kept very low, almost carpeting, through regular trimming. This makes it suitable for fore or mid-ground positioning in an aquarium layout. It s a stem type plant that grows slowly, reaching a height of 3 – 10+ cm. Each stem is approximately 1-2 cm wide and can become over 10 cm tall, branching out and creating a dense appearance. The plant prefers a medium light demand of about 0.5 W L and a medium CO2 need of 6-14 mg L.

In its natural habitat, Hedge Hyssop is often found in wet, partially submerged areas such as pond and lake margins, and wetlands. It s a multi-stemmed and compact plant, forming dense mounds with glandular puberulent stems that give it a sticky feel when touched. The white tubular flowers with a yellow center are characteristic and bloom in summer and fall. This plant can be grown in neutral pH wet sites like bogs, water gardens, or along streams and ponds, preferring partial shade and consistently wet soils.

For aquarium enthusiasts, Gratiola viscidula is not only an aesthetic addition but also plays a role in absorbing ammonia and nitrogenous waste compounds, aiding in maintaining a healthy aquatic environment.
